Balam Balam Place

Balam Balam Place is a new precinct that brings together artists, creatives, the Merri-bek Maternal Child Health Centre and Blak Dot Gallery. The redeveloped site includes South, a contemporary five-storey building, House, a refurbished 1880s residence and Steps, a repurposed 1950s school, all set within a new public park that brings together these distinctive venues for community arts activities.

I worked closely with Jordan Rowe, Kennedy Nolan, Openwork, Finding Infinity, These Are The Projects We Do Together, Blakdot Gallery, and Merri-bek City Council to develop a wayfinding strategy to ensure successful navigation of the precinct.

Specific scope included:

  • On-site observation and movement mapping.
  • User personas, modes and mindsets.
  • Journey mapping of visitors and tenants.
  • Co-design and co-creation.
  • Workshop facilitation.
  • Addressing.
  • Circulation and decision points.
  • Functional requirements of wayfinding signage.
  • Stakeholder engagement.

The way a building can show the strength of infrastructure and the care of home
is not an easy task but it has been done here with such rigour and generosity
